As the weather begins to turn, we start to spend a lot of time and energy ensuring our
families remain as healthy as possible through cold and flu season. That begins with fortifying everyone’s immune systems.
What exactly is this immune system we speak of? Glad you asked!
The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to
protect our bodies through a series of steps called the immune response. When germs
and microorganisms enter the body, the immune system attacks with two types of white blood cells: Phagocytes, cells that destroy invading organisms and lymphocytes, cells that recognize and remember previous invaders to help the body destroy them next time.
Creating and maintaining good health is the best way to keep your immune system
strong and healthy.
We’ve partnered with our long-time favourite immunity supporting product line,
Sambucol Black Elderberry, to help you and your family avoid getting slammed with a winter of never ending sickness (Been there. Not fun).
The good people at Sambucol are obsessed with keeping you healthy and they do so
by doing extensive research on how health is maintained within the body. Their
products are designed to support your immune system so it can fight off whatever
plague your kid brings home from God-knows-where.
And because we’re chums, they are offering the RM Community free samples (!!) , so click on this link to sign up to receive samples of their Black Elderberry Immunity + Cold and Flu Relief Gummies, and Powdered Drink Immunity Cold & Flu Relief + Vitamin C which are effective, delicious and safe for kids as young as age 3 and 4 respectively.
But of course, supplements are just one piece of the immune building puzzle. There are lots of other things we can do to naturally increase our chance at fighting off whatever grossness is heading our way in the coming months.
Here are some immune boosting changes you can make today:
1. Don’t smoke cigarettes. Look, we’ve been known to sneak one here and there
too, but we know that right now is a great time to drop the habit. It’s expensive.
It’s smelly. It’s not fun to stand outside in the cold. And most importantly,
cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which can
weaken your immune system, making it less effective at fighting off infections.
2. Eat a high fibre diet. This one is easy because high fibre foods like avocados,
oranges, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, beans, and figs ARE DELICIOUS. They also
reduce inflammation, and can speed up your recovery from bacterial infections.
Score!
3. Exercise Regularly. It’s an admittedly tough practice to establish (for us,
anyway) but experts agree that even a few minutes a day can be helpful.
Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways so dust off
those trainers or pull that exercise mat out of storage and get those reps in. Your
whole body will thank you. If you don’t know where to start, we recommend
PBW’s beginner on-demand video series.
4. Drink only in moderation. Reel it in, sisters! Resist the urge to drink your
seasonal depression away because excess alcohol consumption may lead to
immune deficiency and increased susceptibility to illness and certain diseases
and ain’t nobody got time for that. Luckily the mocktail scene is exploding right
now and there are lots of options to help you curb your alcohol consumption
while still enjoying a delicious bevvy.
5. Get adequate sleep. For parents, this is hard. For parents of very young
children, it’s borderline impossible. But no matter our circumstance, we should all
commit to doing our best to prioritize getting solid rest. Maybe that means
heading to bed a little earlier, or ensuring our phones are charging out of reach,
or improving our sleep environment with cool fresh air and inviting linens (we
recommend these ones) … Whatever you do, it will be worth the effort because
researchers have found that a good nights sleep can boost the effectiveness of
specialized immune cells called T cells. Zzz’s for T’s. Make that your new
mantra.
6. Cook your meat thoroughly. This might seem obvious but food poisoning will
absolutely weaken your immune system so to avoid that, make sure you’re
cooking meats to a safe temperature to ensure any bacteria, viruses, and
parasites are eliminated. You could also just become vegetarian like us and
avoid this drama altogether 😉
7. Try to minimize stress. Is that audible laughter we hear? We get it. Life is
stressful. We continue to live through one unprecedented time after another and
it’s a lot. But stress is dangerous AF because it decreases the immune systems
ability to fight off antigens, making you more susceptible to infection. So please
do your best to limit the stressors in your life to the best of your ability (that
means setting boundaries and getting used to saying “NO”) and make sure
you’re checking in with yourself regularly to ensure you’re not reaching a point of
overwhelm.
And in case the healthy hygiene habits that were drilled into our heads in 2020 and 2021 are becoming part of your foggy pandemic memories, here’s a little reminder of the small things we can do daily to keep our households sickness-free.
– Consider the flu shot and/or updating your Covid vaccine
– Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth
– Avoid contact with sick people
– Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing
– Stay home if you have a respiratory infection and the following 24 hours after a
fever
– Fill half of your plate at every meal with brightly coloured fruits and vegetables
– Start and end your day with a warm bath or shower
– Stay active throughout the winter months
Please take good care of yourself and your family this year. Implement as many of the
above tips as you can and give Sambucol Black Elderberry products a try (click here to order your free samples).
