The Best Money You’ll Ever Spend (On Yourself)

The Best Money You’ll Ever Spend (On Yourself)

Ever check your bank account balance and wonder where all your cash has disappeared to? You were investing it, babe. In your littles (they grow so fast!), your groceries (gah how is lettuce $8?), life in general (mortgages, rent, utilities, transportation, endless program registrations.. ) and occasionally, if you’re lucky, you may have even invested a little in yourself. For us that investment often looks like shoes, overpriced martinis, skincare, hair appointments and all sorts of other stuff that upon close inspection doesn’t really move the needle on our quality of life. That’s why this year we decided to try something new and invest in our health for a change.

Now, is there a conversation to be had about the downsides of privatization of healthcare? For sure. But until women specific care becomes mainstream and accessible for all, we don’t have a ton of other options.

Did you know, women spend on average 25% more of their lives in poorer health compared to men and are diagnosed later than men for over 700 diseases? Pretty shitty stats, but this is the current state of our medical system.

We’ve all been there: months (or years) waiting for answers, being told “it’s just stress” or “that’s part of getting older,” while bouncing between healthcare providers who never quite connect the dots. It’s exhausting, and worse, it leaves too many of us feeling unheard, unseen, and not in control of their own health.

The truth of the matter is the healthcare system we rely on wasn’t designed with us in mind – it’s fragmented, reactive, and still largely built around a “default male” model that ignores the unique ways women’s bodies change across our lifespans.

This is why we jumped at the opportunity to partner with Lume Women + Health. In the spirit of transparency you should know that for this partnership, we chose to waive our fees and instead participate in a trade agreement: awareness campaign in exchange for full health assessments. For the first time, we chose health over cold hard cash and honestly it was the best decision (business or otherwise) we’ve ever made.

Lume Women + Health created a space where women finally get the time, attention, and expertise they deserve. At the heart of their approach is the Personal Health Assessment (PHA) – a deep dive into your health that arms you with knowledge, strategies, and a long-term plan to optimize your well-being. Think of it as your baseline blueprint for the healthiest, longest, most vibrant version of you.

It’s hard to describe how incredible it was to leave a doctor’s appointment finally feeling understood, in tune and empowered with knowledge about our ever changing bodies. From menstruation, to pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and everything in between, these bodies have been through it.

What You Get with your Physical Health Assessment at Lume:

Your PHA is far from a “check the box” physical. It’s a 5-hour, multi-disciplinary assessment rooted in evidence-based medicine and tailored to women. Here’s what’s included:

  • Comprehensive physician consultation with a women’s health and longevity-trained doctor
  • In-depth lab work and biomarker testing (think cholesterol, hormones, vitamin levels, metabolic health, and more)
  • DEXA body composition scan (bone health + fat and muscle distribution)
  • Cardiovascular fitness testing (including VO2 Max)
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing screen
  • Screening hearing and vision tests (did you know that hearing loss in midlife can increase your risk of dementia by 7%!!!)
  • Mammogram coordination
  • Nutrition and exercise consultations
  • A personalized health plan built around Lume’s 8 Pillars of Health for women (cardiovascular health, brain health, bone and muscle health, metabolic health, hormonal health, mental well-being, and cancer prevention)
  • Your own online account with everything in one spot, that you can access any tim
  • Ongoing Lume team support if you have any questions / concerns

At the end, you walk away with a roadmap that’s as unique as you are.

Now let’s talk numbers.

The full PHA will run you $4000, but wait – before that sticker shock sets in, let us offer a little perspective:

In the span of a year, it’s likely you’ll find yourself spending:

  • Hair colouring + cuts: $2,000
  • Manicures + pedicures: $1,200
  • Waxing or laser: $1,500
  • Botox / fillers / anti-aging treatments: $2,000–$5,000
  • Skincare and Makeup Products: $1000+
    Grand Total? $7700+

(And let’s not forget our personal least favorite trend, the “Mommy Makeover” coming in at $15-20K)

We’re not saying to ditch these forms of self-care altogether (they matter too, and come in many individual forms). But when you zoom out, the question becomes: How much would you pay to be in the driver’s seat of your health? To know where you stand today, and how to prevent what’s coming tomorrow?

Your PHA isn’t just a doctor’s visit. It’s an investment in your future self – your energy, your confidence, and your peace of mind.

Trust us, this is one appointment you’ll never regret making.
And we are so thankful we did.
