Breastfeeding entails a host of contradictions. It’s exhilarating; it’s exhausting. It’s painful; it’s satisfying. It’s “free” but it’s labour intensive. It’s natural but it sure as hell ain’t easy. That’s why we’re always game to share resources and products that are designed to support mamas on their nursing journeys. Enter: The Lactation Cookie Company.
The Lactation Cookie Company was born from its founder (Lisa Sanguedolce)’s personal challenges with breastfeeding. Being a baker, bakery owner and bonafide Rebel Mama, she decided to take her challenges and spin them into an opportunity to empower herself and others. Working closely with nutritionists, food scientists and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Catherine McEvilly Pest, Lisa developed a lactation cookie recipe that contained whole food ingredients and galactagogues (that’s *science* for things that support milk production) like flax, rolled oats, Canadian maple syrup and brewer’s yeast which all promote milk supply. Once the recipe was finalized, she knew she had to share them with as many breastfeeding mothers as possible. Enter: us.
As you know, we are big proponents of supporting local (ideally female-run) businesses, so when The Lactation Cookie Company got on our radar and we found out they are made-in-Ontario, mom-founded, AND that for every box of The Lactation Cookie Company cookies purchased, a donation is made to La Leche League in Canada and the U.S. to support breastfeeding education in North America, we knew we wanted to help share. We had a box sent to one of our dear friends and new mama, Candice, for a full review.
Candice’s main point of concern right now is supply. Her 6-month-old daughter was just sleep trained and as a result, Mama noticed her milk supply was diminishing. She committed to eating The Lactation Cookie Company’s cookies for a full week according to the instructions (which are to eat 3 cookies a couple hours before breastfeeding to help support milk supply). The result? Yes! She did notice an increase in milk supply! She also loved that they’re only 7% sugar, that they’re peanut free (she has a pretty serious allergy), and that the price point is more accessible (per 100g) than their competitors.
She did find them to be a bit dry, though and always had to follow with a glass of water (which – to be fair – when trying to increase milk supply, actually might be a good thing!). She also would have liked to have had some more flavour options available, but we’ve been assured by Lisa herself that those will be coming soon!
